Tacheng is located in the northwest of Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region, bordering Kazakhstan. Situated on the alluvial plain of the Emin River, it has a temperate continental climate with four distinct seasons: cold and dry winters, mild and humid summers.
Tacheng has a long history as an important passage on the ancient Silk Road. During the Qing Dynasty, it served as the seat of the Tarbagatai Councilor General, and in modern times became a key trading hub between China and Russia, where diverse cultures converged.
Tacheng is culturally diverse, with Han, Kazakh, Uygur, and other ethnic groups living in harmony, rich in folk customs. Its cuisine features草原 flavors like hand-grabbed lamb, baked buns, and horse sausage, along with unique Russian bread and kvass.
Modern Tacheng relies on the Bakhtu Port for border trade, becoming a key node on the Belt and Road Initiative. The city is rapidly developing, with tourism flourishing.
The best time to visit 塔城 is Summer (June-August) and Autumn (September-October).
Summer is mild with lush grasslands, ideal for visiting Bakhtu Port and Kurustai Grassland.
Autumn has clear skies and golden poplars along the Emin River, perfect for photography and outdoor activities.
Winter is cold but offers ice and snow experiences; spring is windy, making it less ideal for tourism.
The Qing Dynasty established the Tarbagatai Councilor, stationed in present-day Tacheng, to strengthen the administration of the northwestern frontier.
The Sino-Russian Treaty of Kulja and Tarbagatai was signed, making Tacheng a trade port between China and Russia.
Baktu Port was approved as a national first-class port, making Tacheng a frontier of opening up.
