Shizuishan is located in the northern part of the Ningxia Hui Autonomous Region, bordering the Yellow River to the east and the Helan Mountains to the west, situated in the northern Ningxia Plain. It has a temperate continental climate with four distinct seasons, abundant sunshine, large temperature differences between day and night, and low annual precipitation.
Shizuishan has a long history, with ancestors living here as early as the Qin and Han dynasties. During the Ming dynasty, the Pinglu Defense Station was established, and in the Qing dynasty it became Pingluo County. After the founding of New China, with the development of coal resources, Shizuishan gradually grew into an industrial city, once known as the 'Coal City on the Frontier.'
Shizuishan has a diverse culture, blending Central Plains farming culture, grassland nomadic culture, and Western Xia culture. Signature dishes include hand-grabbed lamb, lamb offal soup, cold noodles, and oil cakes. Among them, hand-grabbed lamb, made from local Tan sheep, is tender and flavorful, representing the local cuisine.
In recent years, Shizuishan has accelerated its transformation from a resource-based city to an eco-friendly livable city. Relying on natural landscapes such as Sand Lake and Xinghai Lake, it has vigorously developed tourism. Meanwhile, the ecological restoration project in the Helan Mountains has achieved remarkable results, and the urban environment continues to improve.
