
Sanmenxia is located in western Henan Province, at the junction of Henan, Shanxi, and Shaanxi provinces, in the middle reaches of the Yellow River. It has a warm temperate continental monsoon climate with four distinct seasons, an average annual temperature of 13.8°C, and annual precipitation of about 550 mm.
Sanmenxia has a long history and is one of the birthplaces of Chinese civilization. Legend has it that when Yu the Great controlled the floods, he split three gorges with a divine axe, forming the Renmen, Guimen, and Shenmen gorges, hence the name. It was once home to historical sites such as the Guo State and Hangu Pass.
