Located in the northeastern part of Heilongjiang Province, Jiamusi sits at the confluence of the Heilong, Wusuli, and Songhua Rivers. It has a cold temperate continental monsoon climate, with long, cold winters and short, cool summers. The annual average temperature is around 3°C.
Jiamusi has a long history and is one of the birthplaces of the Sushen people. It was part of the Heishui Mohe tribe during the Tang Dynasty, established as Yilan County in the Qing Dynasty, became the capital of Hejiang Province after liberation in 1945, and was placed under Heilongjiang Province in 1949.
Jiamusi is a major settlement for the Hezhe ethnic group, whose fish skin crafting technique is recognized as a national intangible cultural heritage. Its cuisine features Northeast Chinese dishes and Hezhe flavors, such as pickled cabbage stew with pork and blood sausage, river fish stewed in river water, and Hezhe Talaha (raw fish).
As an important commodity grain base in China, Jiamusi lies in the hinterland of the Sanjiang Plain and boasts advanced modern agriculture. It also develops trade with Russia, with port facilities like the Tongjiang Railway Bridge, making it a key node in the Northeast Asian economic circle.
The best time to visit 佳木斯 is Summer (June-August) and Winter (December-February).
Summer (June-August) is the golden season for tourism in Jiamusi, with cool and pleasant weather, average temperature around 20°C, ideal for visiting Sanjiang Wetland, Heixiazi Island and other natural attractions.
Winter (December-February) offers ice and snow experiences, such as Jiamusi Ice and Snow World and activities on the Songhua River. Temperatures can drop to -30°C, so warm clothing is essential.
Spring and autumn are short. In spring (May), apricot blossoms can be enjoyed; in autumn (September-October), the forests are colorful, but temperature changes are large, so keep warm.
In August 1945, the Soviet Red Army entered Jiamusi, the Japanese Kwantung Army surrendered, and Jiamusi was liberated. In December of the same year, Hejiang Province was established with Jiamusi as its capital.
In 1988, the State Council approved Jiamusi as an open city along the river, promoting trade with Russia and border economic development.
