It has a cold temperate continental monsoon climate, with long, cold winters and short, cool summers. The average annual temperature is about 3°C.
Hegang rose to prominence due to coal. Coal resources were discovered in 1914, mining began in 1918, and after liberation in 1945, it became a major coal base. It was once one of the four major coal cities in Heilongjiang, contributing a significant amount of energy to national construction.
Hegang's culture is a blend of the black soil characteristics of Northeast China and immigrant culture, embodying the unique Beidahuang spirit. The local cuisine is dominated by Northeast dishes such as Guobao Rou, Suancai with Blood Sausage, Iron Pot Stew, and Hegang Small Skewers, known for generous portions and bold flavors.
In recent years, Hegang has gained national attention for its low housing prices. The city is actively promoting transformation, developing emerging industries such as graphene and eco-tourism, striving to reduce dependence on coal and create a new image as a livable and tourist-friendly destination.
