Hanzhong is located in the southwest of Shaanxi Province, bordered by the Qinling Mountains to the north and the Bashan Mountains to the south, with the Han River flowing through, forming the Hanzhong Basin. It has a subtropical monsoon climate, warm and humid with four distinct seasons, and an average annual temperature of 14.3°C, earning it the nickname 'Little Jiangnan of the Northwest'.
Hanzhong has a long history and is the birthplace of Han culture. In 312 BC, King Huiwen of Qin established Hanzhong Commandery. Liu Bang was later enfeoffed as the King of Han here, using Hanzhong as his base to unify the realm and establish the Han Dynasty. During the Three Kingdoms period, Zhuge Liang stationed troops in Hanzhong and launched five northern expeditions, leaving behind rich historical relics.
Hanzhong boasts profound cultural heritage, with intangible cultural heritages such as Handiao Guangguang opera and Hanzhong folk songs. Its cuisine is distinctive, represented by Hanzhong Mianpi (steamed rice noodles), Vegetable Tofu, and Baohe Fresh Fish, featuring sour, spicy, and savory flavors that blend Sichuan and Shaanxi styles.
Modern Hanzhong has developed into a regional central city with convenient transportation, including the Xi'an-Chengdu High-Speed Railway and the Baoji-Bazhong Expressway. Adhering to ecological priority, Hanzhong develops green industries. The sea of rapeseed flowers and crested ibis protection have become city cards, and tourism is thriving.
The best time to visit 汉中 is Spring (March-May) and Autumn (September-November).
Spring (March-May): Millions of acres of rapeseed flowers bloom in Hanzhong Basin, forming a golden sea of flowers, the most beautiful season. Pleasant temperatures average 15-25°C, ideal for outdoor flower viewing and spring outings.
Autumn (September-November): Clear and crisp weather with charming autumn scenery. The red leaves in Liping National Forest Park and the autumn views along the Han River are enchanting. Average temperatures 10-20°C, suitable for hiking and photography.
Summer (June-August) is hot, but mountainous areas like Zibai Mountain are summer resorts; winter (December-February) is mild with little snow, offering hot springs and winter folk activities.
Liu Bang was enfeoffed as King of Han by Xiang Yu, with his capital at Nanzheng (present-day Hanzhong). Using this as a base, he built an altar and appointed Han Xin as general, feigned repairs to the plank road while secretly crossing at Chencang, eventually unifying the realm and founding the Han Dynasty.
Zhuge Liang stationed troops and farmed in Hanzhong, launching five Northern Expeditions against Cao Wei. He died of illness at Wuzhangyuan. Relics such as Wuhou Temple and Dingjun Mountain witness this history.
