It has a warm temperate semi-humid monsoon climate with four distinct seasons, moderate rainfall, and abundant sunshine. The annual average temperature is 15.7°C. The city is crisscrossed by rivers, with the Ying River, the largest tributary of the Huai River, flowing through it, earning it the reputation of 'Granary of Jianghuai'.
Fuyang was historically known as Yingzhou, with a history dating back to the Western Zhou period when it was the territory of the Hu State. In the Qin Dynasty, Ruyin County was established, and in the Northern Wei Dynasty, Yingzhou Prefecture was set up, remaining an important town in northern Anhui ever since. During the Northern Song Dynasty, literary giants like Ouyang Xiu and Su Shi served as officials here, leaving behind numerous poems and essays. In the Qing Dynasty, it was upgraded to Yingzhou Prefecture, and later became a county after the Republic of China. In 1996, it was upgraded to a prefecture-level city.
Fuyang boasts profound cultural heritage and is the birthplace of folk arts such as Huagudeng (flower drum lantern) and Haizi opera. Fuyang paper-cutting is hailed as 'a unique Chinese folk art', and Jieshou colored pottery firing technique is listed as a national intangible cultural heritage. Local cuisine features dishes like Gela noodles, pillow-shaped steamed buns, and Fuyang board chicken, which are savory, spicy, and full of local flavor.
In recent years, leveraging its geographical advantages, Fuyang has vigorously developed modern agriculture, medical health, electronic information, and other industries. With the opening of the Shangqiu-Hefei-Hangzhou and Zhengzhou-Fuyang high-speed railways, Fuyang has become a major transportation hub in northern Anhui. Urban construction is changing rapidly, with new landmarks like the West Lake New Area and High-speed Rail New Area emerging, as the city strides towards becoming a regional central city.
